We think the best relationships are forged when we are comfortable, relaxed and free of pressure. Preferring instead to think of the evening as a casual night out where one can truly be themselves. We do not use traditional 'speed dating' offerings such as bells, whistles and name-tags. Instead we focus on creating an atmosphere conducive to meeting others; a great venue, a personable host and a staff to assist.

~~~
Upon arriving at your chosen event - locate your event host. Your host will assist in setting you up with your scorecard for the evening. A simple and convenient way to keep track of whom you enjoyed meeting and those that you would like to see again. Should you have any questions - feel free to ask away. Take the time before the event starts to settle in - have a beverage if you would like and mingle should you wish. The speed dating portion of the event begins once all daters have arrived, checked in and had a moment or two to relax and unwind.
~~~

During the event, Ladies will stay seated and the Gentleman will rotate from table to table every 5 - 6 minutes. Our host will guide the Gentleman to let them know when their time is up and facilitate in seeing them to the next table. The goal is to find someone you would like to speak with further. Don't fret about figuring out if person is the one or the perfect person for you. Consider it the date before the date. Select those you would like to meet again and give the completed scorecard back to your host at the end of the evening. Our staff will tabulate the results and email you the following day with your results. If you choose someone and they chose you - it's a match. You will be given each others first name and email address. The rest is up to you.

Ice fishing is a quintessential Minnesota winter sport. Have you ever walked on a frozen lake? Fished through the ice? You can do that and more at this event hosted by the Hastings Park and Recreation Department and Carpenter St. Croix Nature Center among others. Fishing licenses will not be required, but it is a strictly catch and release program.

We supply the bait, poles, tackle, encouragement and instruction so all you need to do is show up and join us on the ice. We even drill the holes through which you fish, but you can drill your own if you wish! Be sure to join a ranger in a shelter and while warming up view the mysterious world below the ice through an underwater camera. Check the park's event pages (Jan 26 or Feb 6) for updates especially if the weather has been warm. We check ice safety a couple of days before the event and if the ice isn’t safe post a notice on the park's website.

Join us for the first event of the year. This event will have two-parts, and you can choose to attend one or both. Please register for only one ticket type per participant.

App Inventor Training and Mentor Orientation: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This training event will introduce girls and mentors to principles of coding and to the MIT App Inventor tool used as part of the Technovation Challenge. There is a beginner and advanced option for the training session.

Mentors will have a separate training opportunity during this time. Attendees will learn about the Technovation Challenge, ways to be engaged as mentors, use the MIT App Inventor, and network with others.

Non-Profit Speed Networking: 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

This year, we’re offering an opportunity for app ideation! As part of the Technovation Challenge, teams of girls build mobile apps to solve a problem in their community. To help facilitate brainstorming, we are inviting local non-profits to join us and share problems their organization faces in achieving its goals that could be resolved with a mobile app. Girls and mentors are encouraged to interact with these organizations during the break or after App Day training.

Those who are already comfortable with App Inventor can stop by between 10:30-12:30 with questions for the non-profits! The girls are not required to select an idea that they learn about at this event, and multiple teams can work to solve the same problem.

Mentors:

  • Learn about the Technovation Challenge and mentor expectations

  • Create 1 mobile app using App Inventor, a free, powerful, easy-to-use programming language

  • No experience necessary; our friendly trainers will guide you. App Inventor is what you will use to mentor a team in the Technovation Challenge.

  • See more here: technovationMN.org.

Girls ages 10 to 18* (Beginner):

  • Join us for an awesome morning learning to code mobile apps with App Inventor, a free, powerful, easy-to-use programming language

  • No experience necessary; our friendly mentors will guide you in creating 2 fun Android apps. You and your friends can use this skill to create a mobile app and compete in the Technovation Challenge starting in January 2019.

  • Most appropriate for new students

  • See more here: technovationMN.org

Girls 10 to 18* (Advanced):

  • Register for this session if you were a prior Technovation team member and want to learn advanced database techniques.

  • Should know the basic skills of App Inventor to attend this session.

  • See more here: technovationMN.org

* Girls 13 or under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during entire the event.

Non-profit representative:

  • Help teams come up with ideas for the development of their app!

  • Share an overview of the non-profit you represent and present the girls with some of the challenges your organization faces in achieving its goals.

Location & Parking:

The event will take place in the Technical Building in room T3000 (3rd floor) and will begin promptly at 9:00 am. Please look at the campus mapcarefully. Also be sure to allow yourself extra time for parking and finding the room. Street parking (i.e., meter parking) around MCTC is typically free on Saturdays (be sure to double check!). There is a parking ramp directly north of the Technical Building and connected through the skyway. Several public transit options are available; please check MetroTransit for the latest schedules.
